Last week I performed with, spoke to, and hung out with the Michael Jordan of female MC's. MC Lyte is one of the pillars of Hip Hop Music along with Run DMC, DJ Premier, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Salt & Pepper, LL Cool J and countless others. It was an out of body experience. I B-Boxed (yes I knw how to lol) for her while she freestyled to kick the show off, performed Self-Destruction with her, and freestyled myself on stage with a certified legend (she said I was dope-sidebar lol). All of this was captured on film & in pix by my homie Randy Troy and will be in the upcoming #NoDaysOff Documentary that will accompany the #NoDaysOff EP dropping later this year. Peep the pix and remember never stop grinding because this could be you one day if you work hard and never doubt your abilities.
#nodaysoff #MCLYTE #moves #believe #U

Letter After T, Before V
'U'

Baby Mobsters

Hola visions readers. Today I just felt compelled to do a post on an artist who just does it all. He raps, produces, an established actor, comedian and all around overachiever. This guy's hustle just never ends. I'm talking about Donald Glover. You don't know who that is? You may know him by another name: Childish Gambino. He has made power moves to take his rap career to the next level and I have to say I've become a fan of his come up. A Drake-esque style and similar actor turned rapper path CG has a very in your face, raw, open, and utterly catchy style and delivery. More of a punchline guy he has some very clever lines in his verses. "Alright Gambino is a mastermind, fuck a bitch to past the time, mass appeal orange line, you smoke your green I'm spending mine, the beat is witches brew so beware this shit is potent, ee cumin in her face call it poetry in motion" although a bit vulgar this bar from 'Freaks and Geeks' hooked me from the Jump. He is also very real all too often we catch artist trying to talk about things they have no business talking about but CG isn't one of them. From Touching on his plight with girls to worrying about people not believing in him, Childish goes through and helps to make the soundtrack to every male early 20 something year olds life. Im looking forward to hearing more from him and what a full length mixtape has to offer but I'm down with the CG movement. He is also on tour and I'm totally looking for some tickets but I hear they are a hard find. If you guys got a hook up let me know!! That's all for now and I'm going to post his most recent EP for you guys to checkout because I have most definitely been bumping to it. ENJOI!

Twitter: @DonaldGlover
Blog: http://www.Iamdonald.com
Http://www.childishgambino.blogspot.com
Childish Gambino EP: http://www.mediafire.com/?545ra9xzlgftngc (if you can't click through just copy and paste)

Stay RURF
Sdot

One More Time For The Ladies

My heart was all a'flutter as I got hit with all things wonderful upon the news of Elle Magazine's new issue launch. The "Women In Music" issue features 12 female artists that demonstrate insane talent, crazy style, and endless swag on the regular. I love that the dozen are a combination of both rookies and vets and that Elle really handpicked a variety of artists that cover all genres. Gwen Stefani is the star of the show, however, Miss Nicki Minaj also landed a well-deserved cover shot. Others include Willow Smith, Adele, and Jennifer Hudson as well as some true queens in the game like Aretha Franklin.

It's really refreshing to come across yet another movement of unity and women's empowerment through such a universal outlet as music and art. & of course this post wouldn't be true to form if I didn't also mention the sick styling within this spread!! I'm practically drooling over Nicki's mini dress by designer Mark Fast, and I adore that dope origami-inspired skirt wrapped around tiny little Willow. (More on my obsession after I actually cop the issue LoL).

MTV peeped the fact that neither Katy Perry nor Rihanna made the final 12, which I must agree was a little surprising. They also dropped some great quotes from Gwen Stefani on how she feels about some of the newcomers and the image that they're striving for, claiming that despite what many say, she sees very little influence of herself in them. (click here for MTV's article)

All in all, I'm really excited about the issue which hits stands April 12th. Elle really scored big with combining the style, beauty, talent, and charisma of a group of ladies that surely have a story to tell. I highly encourage anyone who is as passionate as I am about music, fashion, and girl power to support this dope editorial piece!!

With Love, xo

VIIs on VIIs on VIIs

SNEAKER POST!! I know I know we haven't had one in a while but this one without a doubt makes up for all the sneaker news we have missed out on. This year seems to be the year of the VIIs (Which just so happens to be my favorite pair of Jays). There are 2 major releases that drop this month and one that cam out in march that have the sneaker world buzzing. The Orion Blue VIIs dropped last month to some critical acclaim. They are definitely a clean shoe and a must cop in my book. The only downside would be that they are a General Release so don't expect to be the only one with them on. This month has 2 super special VII releases. Another new colorway and a very sought after quickstrike called the "year of the rabbit". This have a slight resemblance to the Hare VIIs yet clearly are their own shoe. These you will have to do some hunting for and trust you will want to grab yourself a pair if you can! No set release date nut they are slated to release around eater (whenever that is lol). And last but most definitely not least the amazing and magnificent re-release of the Jordan VII Bordeauxs. Misha B. inspires all, "It's never too late". Anything is possible if you really want it. This is what we (Me aka Andre Patron Jr., The League's Manny aka Javier Haze and Nate aka Thaddeus Hennessy and Grizz Nation's Rob aka Slim the Ace [or as we are collectively known SDMG]) so fittingly named our trip to California. 6 days and 6 nights of purely random escapades, tomfoolery and all around utter debauchery. It was, to say the least, the best time I have ever had in my entire life! We quite literally turned Cali inside out. If I could explain it I would but I can't so I won't just know that tthe pictures I am sharing with you don't even begin to show you how awesome our trip really was and it really was a time to remember. Made some new friends, got some new contacts and we really got to see what Cali had to offer and show them what Jersey brings to the table. So just take a gander at a couple of our photos. and know this.. The is the 1st of many in the on going story that is #TheJourneyoftheBasedGods (I am totally going to copyright that!). I know you guys get a little anxious when we have our short hiatuses but we always come back with special little gems for you guys. Today is a post on a pretty dope website/store based out in Vancouver (Yes, Canada) that has one of the illest selections of DS snapbacks, sweatshirts, jackets and other vintage apparel that you are probably not going to find anywhere else. I'm talking about FasinFrankvintage.com. So any of you back packers, hiptsters or sports apparel junkies who are looking for a huge selection of vintage college, NBA, NFL, NHL and miscellaneous clothing this is definitely the site for you. I have been on the site a few times (thanks to my lovely lady friend Sabrina) and I have already picked out about 8 items I'm purchasing once I re-up. He was the son of a sharecropper and his mother was Meline Thas and as a child he lived on his family’s farm. He also went to a segregated public school in Pike County. As a child he already experienced the harsh rules of racism of the down south. But he felt inspired by the sufficient movement of the Montgomery Bus Boycott (when African Americans refused to take the bus because of what happen to Rosa Parks). He also felt inspiration from the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When listening to Dr. King’s words on the radio he knew that he should help the cause. There were serial other accounts, such as. When he was ten and wanted to rent out a book the librarian blatantly told him that, books were for whites not blacks.
After High school John went to American Baptist Theological Seminary and at Fisk University. He studied as a student Lewis studied the philosophy and discipline of non-violence. He studied people such as Henry David Thoreau and Mahatma Gandhi. While attending Fisk, John organized a sit-in at a segregated lunch counter in Nashville, Tennessee. By the spring of 1960 he was the main leader in other Nashville sit-ins. In the sit-ins people would put lit cigarettes down their back or coffee or hot water. But they say claim and orderly. All of the students were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

He suffered a fractured skull at the hands of Alabama State police. And before he knew it the sit-ins were going around the whole the south. On May 1 1961 in Washington DC Lewis took part in the Freedom rides. The rides were organized because of a Supreme Court decision banning segregation in interstate travel. He was risking a lot to partake in the rides angry people would wait for the riders ready to abuse them. But Lewis became known when he orchestrated the Selma to Montgomery marches. There purpose was to march for the right to vote. At that time blacks had to pass a literacy test before voting, on top of that most of them were not even registered to vote. There were three marches in all, the first march was called “Blood Sunday”. A week after "Bloody Sunday," Lewis said President Lyndon Johnson spoke to a joint session of Congress and the nation.
Later Lewis joined Dr. King any many others in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. From 1963 to 1966 Lewis was named chairman of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) which he helped form. When they reached Washington and some people made speeches such as Dr. King and his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Lewis was the youngest to speak. In 1977 Lewis ran for elective office and lost. With no job and penniless from his campaign he agreed to be associate director of ACTION for the Carter administration. In 1986 he ran for U.S Senate and won against Wyche Fowler. He is currently a United States House of Representatives from Georgia 5th district.

Hudini

Paved the Path: Grace and Style

Before there was Beyonce, Lady GaGa, Rihanna, or any other "edgy" showgirl of our generation, there was Grace Jones.
The influential actress, singer, and model was born in Jamaica in 1948 and found fame in the United States throughout the 80s and 90s while also building her brand all over the world.

Fluent in many languages and well-versed in the power of Black enterprise, Grace Jones constantly pushed the envelope in regard to her image and presence in media. Michelle Obama is truly amazing and a role model for many, myself included.

Thank you, Michelle Obama

With Style,

NyjerahNicole

Paved The Path: The Last True King

Probably the most important post I'll ever do aside from when I sign my first contract lol But in light of BHM I think that it wouldnt make sense for the Pave the Path series to not include the most influential man in the history of music. Only a few names such as James Brown, Prince, Steavie Wonder can be mentioned in the same breath as the great Michael Jackson. He not only re-defined the genre of Pop, but revolutionized and inspired just about every mainstream genre existent today. Oh yeah, he set the standard for the 'music video' with Thriller which happened to be the highest selling album of all-time that will never ever be matched. Michael Jackson is the Michael Jordan of Music (fitting they did a video/song together off his classic album dangerous). Plain and simple, without Michael there would be no Kanye West, no Alicia Keys, no Ne-Yo, no Justin Bieber, no Chris Brown, no Wyclef Jean, no Pharell, no Black Eyed Peas, or any popular mainstream artist of our current generation. When he passed last year, I cried just like every other artist or fan touched by his music and greatness did. However, they were tears of joy mixed with sadness because he was trully the Last True King of our time.

Letter After T, Before V

'U'

Paved the Path: Clutch

February 17th, 1963 Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born to Deloris Peoples and James Jordan in Brooklyn, NY. It wasn't known then but he would go on to become the greatest basketball player of all time. MJ would go on to become an Icon in the world of sports, the NBA, and sneakers the world over. A man of great stature and desire MJ dealt with his fair share of setbacks throughout his life. The lose of his father which triggered his early retirement was a major setback. Being cut from his High School Varsity team because he was deemed too short at 5'11" didn't stop him from following his dream to play basketball.. He went on to become a star at Laney High and go on to play for the University of North Carolina where his sophomore and junior he was voted as an All American and received player of the year awards (in his junior season). He went on to be drafted 3rd overall by the Chicago Bulls and that would ever change the basketball world forever. Wearing his shorts longer larger than other players, banned sneakers, sticking his tongue out mid air when scoring MJ was in your face and unabashedly himself. 6X NBA Champion, 5X NBA MVP, 6X Finals MVP and host of other accolades that propelled him to being (arguably) the Greatest of All Time. MJ also left an impression on the sneaker world and is easily one of the 3 major reasons this blog exist. Air Jordan's are (in my opinion) the greatest sneakers ever created. MJ (along with Nike) completely flipped the sneaker world on its ears. Adidas was the premier sneaker company at the time and a fairly unknown Nike took a chance on MJ and turned him into a Multi-Million dollar icon and Nike into a Multi-Billion Dollar company. Role Model, Superstar, Icon, and Mogul Michael Jordan epitomizes what can be achieved with a burning desire and a will to win. So I raise my Jordan VII (hehe!) to him and say Kudos MJ. ENJOI!

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. The powerful words I quoted at the beginning were spoken by the beautiful young lady pictured above And I have to say I was quite awestricken by her passion and conviction. That young woman, Simply Kat (as she is so eloquently called), performed several of her pieces for the audience. It felt like I fell in love with poetry all over again because of her. I had gone through a stint where poetry/spoken word just didn't hit me like it use to. Sometimes people are just too cheesy or hipster or wannabe deep and their isn't any real passion in what they are writing (or saying) and it shows. Not Kat. Each poem from her really brought me back to memories of how spoken word is suppose to make you feel. I am indebted to her for that much. Her poems 'Purple', 'Beautifully Human' and 'Love for Nemo' (each which she performed at the show) were wonderful. Each poem had a message that hit home for me. Purple, my favorite of the three, was a much needed reminder to me of how important it is to follow your dreams and live your life for no one but yourself and the ones you love. I was so moved that I felt the need to support and had the chance to purchase her book of spoken word entitled 'Human'. I sat and read the entire thing on the long ride home back to NJ and I loved every bit of it. She is an awesome poet and a great person (she's pretty cute too :-) and I just had to let all of our readers know that there are those who are passionate and skilled, at what they do, out there and it must be commended. I randomly came across an ad for the new Valentine's Nike Dunks and I immediately said to myself, "kids still cop Valentines sneakers??!". LoL, it seems like just yesterday I was (literally) running around SoHo at 6:45 in the freezing snow trying to get my man the Un-Tiffany's before Clientele closed. Man 2006, those days were so fun, adventurous, and youthful.

Years later, I'm amazed that the same innocence, yet sincerety of going on a quest for the perfect Valentine's Day gift still exists. Fly little 11th graders may be running to the mall to get those new SB's for their boo as I type this..and I applaud them. I haven't been with my "Un-Tiffany" for years now, but while love may fade for whatever reason, kicks are forever. Nowadays, ladies look to jewelry, designer names their basic a%# can barely pronounce, and trips around the world to validate their counterpart, but I've always been a sucker for something a little more thoughtful and practical.

Admittedly, my 20's and my enrollment at a fashion school have transformed me into an official boot/heel/shoe rocker...my Nike's are a thing of the past. My deliberation process is a long and arduous one. It's easy to sometimes to pick the song that was most recently in your head rather than what you thought was the best song overall. So I had to clear my head of each song and go one by one trying to remember what I like(d) about it, where I was mentally and physically at that point in time and does it still have the same affect as it did when I first heard it. Also would I be able to let someone else listen and they would have the same feeling toward the song. A lot of other things go into me choosing as well but these are some of the major factors. My choices were Mos Def - History feat Talib Kweli, Dom Kennedy - It was Beautiful, Rick Ross - B.M.F. feat Styles P, French Montana - I'm on it feat Wiz Khalifa, Nipsey Hussle, and Big Sean, and Reflection Eternal - Just Begun feat. J. Cole, Jay Electronica, and Mos Def. With the factors I mentioned in mind.. the winner is................... Dom Kennedy - It was Beautiful. This song more than any other embodied my year. When I felt unsettled at all or in between on things I just listened to this song. The beat is so melodic along with Dom's Smooth flow. It just makes for a perfect song and my song of the year winner. So Shout out to Dom and this track. You guys go ahead and take a listen to the track and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. It's a decent track from All-Starr Da Great. Taking a more down to earth approach and speaking from the heart which is always a bit more refreshing to hear from a rapper rather then the constant "talk my shit" lyrics that we get so often. The beat is cool and the lyrics are a bit iffy but it still makes for a smooth track. Look out for All-Star Da Great because you will probably be seeing a lot more form him. So check out his newest track Poems and tell me what you think. Rate, Comment, favorite and all that good stuff. I know I have been slacking. This is a feature on a beat tape by my new favorite up and coming producer, Danimal. I did a post on him a little while back and his collab with an artist by the name of Pr3ci$e. Well Danimal is back at us with his newest tape 2 Day Old Sh*t (Beat tape vol. 2). I have to say that I was quite amused to just hear what his beat making ability was like just on its own. Danimal's versatility and creativity is quite refreshing. He took classic tracks and beats and put his own spin on it which (and I'm guessing) is the concept of the beat tape. Well it works. I could see myself taking a crack at a few of these beats because they definitely have serious some knock in speakers. Tracks like "Fuh Uck you" and "Hands in the Air (Turn the party out)" have that familiar vibe but with a new funky twist. He even pays homage to one of my favorite rappers Canibus with the track "Get Retarded 2012". "Karate Chop" makes me want to lyrically slaughter somebody with a slew of multis and chisamic word play. On the other hand, Some beats didn't wow me as much like "Clockin' the Hoes'. Nevertheless Danimal manages to delivers a strong and listen worthy beat tape. So any MCs looking for a dope producer to link up with he is your man. A link to the beat tape and his twitter after the jump. Today's post is of the sneaker aficionado persuasion. 2010 was a big year for kicks. We saw the Cool Grey XIs, Pearl and Copper Foamposites, The re-release of the Olympic VIIs just to name a few. This year seems to be no different. Nike and Jordan brand seems to like causing empty pockets and they don't have any intention of stopping. Today I will be highlighting 3 of the most anticipated releases which just so happen to all be, well (Jordan) IIIs. It has been confirmed that this month the white/cement IIIs will be released, next month the Jordan III Black History Months will be dropping, and later this year in the holiday season the black/cement IIIs will be released. Now I will say that I'm not a fan of IIIs as much as the rest of the sneaker world. They have too much of a bland feel in my opinion. I will say that I do appreciate the beauty of a good color-way and the White/cements might have to end up in my kick arsenal. They are slated to release on the 22nd of this month so if you are looking to grab a pair you got a little over a week to prep. The Black/Cements are probably the most anticipated of the 3 releases and I believe It will also be (and don't quote me on this) a quickstrike so the pandemonium that will ensue will be pretty high. No set date yet but they will be a release to look out for. Finally the BHMs which have had some mixed reviews some completely hate them others are so/so and some love them but despite how folks feel I'm sure they will sell. Look for these in February. So if you are fan of IIIs this is definitely a good year for you. Here are some photos for you to drool over for now. ENJOI!

White/Cement

Black History Months

Black/Cement

Stay RURF
Sdot

Slaughterhouse & Yelawolf Join Forces With Slim Shady on The March XXL Issue

I have a feeling 2011 is gonna be one of the best years for Hip Hop ever. One of Rap's true super-teams, Slaughterhouse, has joined forces with a living legend none other than Mr Shady. And if that isn't enough, a new comer that has definitely made some noise Yelawolf has also inked with Shady Records.
